Our Blog

Today Mel Massey has joined us here at Reading Until I Fall Asleep for a brief interview and to give us some info on her new release coming out next month,  EARTH’S MAGICK.

  • A bit about me:
I’m a mother of two monsters and married to a Sgt in the US Army.  I’m originally from Texas but have lived in California, Florida and Missouri.  I studied Cultural Anthropology and History of Religion in college. I’m also a practicing Pagan.
  • Inspiration for the book:
The inspiration for Earth’s Magick came from my knowledge of witchcraft. There is something primal in the practice of witchcraft that resonates in people, I think.  Some are afraid of it and others are inspired by it.  It inspired me.  From the conception of the idea I read dozens of books on different religious doctrines and used ideas from all of them.  I think spirituality is a deep well of inspiration for authors. Just reading the relationships between the God and Goddesses, the Titan wars, the fall of angels….nothing compares to that.  Those tales haven’t survived this long for nothing.
  • Favorite part to write:
There is a point where Mela, the main character, finally comes face to face with Dektrios (a half-human ancient creature) and so many truths come out.  It was a satisfying moment to finally allow these characters to speak for themselves after only hearing their stories from others.  Mela finds her strength and faces everything she had been previously afraid of.
  • Favorite author:
My favorite author is Anne Rice.  She is fabulous both as an author and as a person.  I love being a part of her FB page where she opens discussions on a broad array of topics and takes the time to interact with everyone.  She’s supportive of fledgling authors too.  I don’t think anyone can ever compare the recent vampire rush with her vampires –  no one is like Lestat De Lioncourt. Rich characters with depth and passion makes for amazing reads.
  • Something people may not know:
I don’t know if people would necessarily be surprised but I am highly political.  I follow politics from local to International.  The biggest and most important chess game is played on a daily basis.  I really wish more people were involved in the day to day politics, not only the month before an election.  On election nights, my friends and I make a map and color it as each state is called.  I watch the DNC and RNC and cheer/Boo accordingly.
  • Advice to writers:
My advice for beginning authors is to write.  Ignore all the “rules” that seem to weigh you down as you begin to write.  There are so many avenues  a writer can take, so all of the “rules of yesterday” really don’t apply anymore.  Self publishing, Indie Publishers and E-books have paved the way for all of us to find our place.  Just write and then take your chance on what feels right for you.  You will find support out there.

Life in Trinity Hills, Texas goes from normal to deadly for Mela Malone. Whenever Mela falls asleep, a mysterious Hag creature tries to kill her. What begins as dabbling in protective spells from an ancient Grimoire, leads to her initiation into an ancient order of warrior witches known as the Elementai.

Mela learns war is coming with The Darkness and the Hag is only one of the evil creatures in its service. As an Elementai, Mela learns it’s her duty to find four part-human sisters who can help defeat the evil that threatens to return to the world. With every new discovery, Mela uncovers ancient secrets that complicate her quest further.

As war approaches, everyone must make a choice – fight with the Elementai for all life on Earth, or fight for The Darkness…
